The illustration on this mug comes from an 1890s magazine article and shows court awards for different limb losses. Successful claimants, said the author of the article, could make a "handsome profit margin" since damages awarded far exceeded the costs of artificial limbs!
The mug shows nine silhouetted bodies, each with one or more limbs missing, and underneath says how much the unfortunate could expect to receive in damages. The figures range from £210 for losing a leg below the knee, to £1,000 for losing both legs above the knee.
