Lady of Justice Glass Paperweight

Glass objects are difficult to photograph, and the picture on this page really doesn't convey how attractive this paperweight is. Imagine an oblong block of solid glass. Now imagine that the scales of justice have been laser-etched on the inside of the block, right at its core, not on the outside surface which is entirely smooth. Rotate the block in your hands, and the scales on the inside are visible from every angle. But do the scales really exist and if so, how has their image been made in the middle of the block? It's a fabulously clever illusion, and the effect is mesmerising.
