In Spring 2008, the Carbolic Smoke Ball buying team - Philip Jenks, his wife and three children - holidayed in Southern Italy. One of the reasons we were there was to visit the Lalex leather works at Pastorano, where they cut and manufacture calfskin accessories using traditional techniques.
We watched the leather being dyed in casks, then cut to pattern, then shaped by steam on wooden moulds, and finally stitched together - all by Italian craftsmen and women who took enormous pride in their work.
The result of this visit was that Lalex agreed to make a range of products for Carbolic, each branded with the scales of justice.

This slim leather folder is such a simple product but incredibly useful. Most coin holders are like purses - round, bulky, and uncomfortable in your trouser pocket. This one is different. You can fit plenty of coins inside, but because the holder is long and slim (6 inches by 1.5 inches, or 145mm x 45mm) it doesn't bulge in your pocket.
It is made from incredibly soft calf leather, with high quality stitching, and two poppers to keep it open and shut. On the front, a discreet scales of justice is stamped into the leather. The lining inside is suede.
There are three colours available: bright orange, green and brown. Our recommendation - keep your pounds in one, your euros in another and dollars in the third.
The coin holder comes in an extremely smart Lalex box, so makes an excellent present to family, friends, or clients. |
