| | This print of William Frith's 'The Plea' is produced from the original Victorian plate and then individually handcoloured. The scene depicts Court 1 of the Old Bailey, where a major trial is in progress. Every fine detail is shown on the large-scale 22" x 18" print. He attended the Henry Sass Academy in London, and in 1853 was appointed a member of the Royal Academ. His paintings were very popular and Frith sold a large number of engravings of these works. In 1875 his painting Before Dinner in Boswell's Lodgings (1868) was sold for £4,567 - at the time, the highest salesroom price paid for the work of a living artist.
